About
We are women* scientists in the field of fluid dynamics who are passionate about building a community that supports and uplifts others in the field. As a not-for-profit initiative, we volunteer our time because we believe it is important to increase the number of women scientists in the field while creating a more inclusive and equitable space for everyone.
Our initiative emerged in 2022 from the Women in Fluids networking group meeting, an annual event hosted by the American Physical Society - Division of Fluid Dynamics where the membership landscape is currently skewed towards male representation. With a dedicated membership of 40+, the Stories of Women in Fluids Initiative is committed to crafting two concurrent anthologies. This approach enables us to engage diverse audiences at various stages of their career journey, expand awareness of women's contributions in fluid dynamics, and foster APS member connections with a wider array of communities.

Our Mission
The Stories of Women in Fluids (SOWIF) Initiative is dedicated to providing a dynamic written platform, inspiring women to mentor and motivate girls and fellow women towards successful fluid dynamics careers. Our dual anthologies serve as catalysts, empowering women to foster diverse representation in the fields of fluid dynamics and physics. Our focus aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal #5 to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by finding female role models and advisors. We prioritize highlighting resilient women, especially women of color, sharing positive narratives, and actively nurturing the recruitment and retention of women in fluid dynamics.

Leadership
Behind the Stories of Women in Fluids (SOWIF) Initiative is a community of women and allies who are rewriting the narrative of science. The Leadership Team embodies that spirit of collaboration and representation, bringing together voices from academia, industry, and education. Together, they steward our mission to amplify women’s voices in fluid dynamics and harness the power of storytelling to transform science and inspire the next generation.
